One Weekend in Alloa – ‘The Lure of Fourteen Lines’ with Dr Sally Evans

Sonnets are very satisfying in length, there is room to say something clear and worthwhile without overstaying your welcome in space. You may call your sonnets fourteen-liners, and use any scheme rhyming or not, though there are several standard or traditional ways of rhyming. I like what I call half-sonnets, with three beats to a line instead of five. We’ll look at a few varying 14-liners, talk about the way they present arguments, and have a quick go ourselves and read them back.

If time, we might add a closing chat on the even more argumentative form of poem, the Sestina and its principles.
The illustration is my husband’s Scots version of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 92, which he irritatingly wrote in ten minutes (but printed with great care). This also shows how sonnets usually contain an argument.
